REVIVAL

The artistic inspiration for this room stemmed from a conceptual metaphor based upon the relationship between ‘the exterior and the interior’; being that of the room, or equally, the person. It draws a parallel between reality and thought; between the room’s external space and the room itself.

Images were deliberately chosen to depict what is found outside of the room, providing both an interaction with the place and re-enforcing the concept behind the piece. That is, how our perception of the external world is reworked by our mind, creating filtered images.
Therefore, the piece becomes a journey through: reality – image – thought – imagination.

For this reason, the images are not simply left as exact reproductions of the reality they represent but rather they are slightly distorted by the artist, illustrating how the mind manipulates its vision of the exterior world. The piece unites memory and imagination, becoming a “non-place”, a neutral place that rests between reality and the virtual. A place that is an abstraction.

Particularly symbolic is the art work displayed on the ceiling of the room. It consists of the fusion of two images by the respective artists. The integrated images act as a metaphorical catalyst in drawing attention to the expansive, black central element of the work, where ‘ribbons of thought’ are depicted as streaming from the mind. The deliberate setting of the piece directly above the head of the bed acts to symbolise ‘profound thought’ as well as a simple, relaxing moment of reflection.
Only photographic pieces were chosen as both artists work principally in this medium.
