INESCAPABLE DIZZINESS
Vertigo can be defined as “the distortion of spatial sensitivity”.
(Arslan)
Expanding beyond its confines, the room we have designed actualises the concepts of ‘extreme vertigo’, ‘danger’ and ‘labyrinth’. The idea was to create a space that breaches its visual boundaries by means of the images and objects placed inside. In constructing this room-installation the aim was to upset the visual ‘norm’ in order to develop an alternative vision. Even the use of the room is distorted; thus, the bed is transformed into a cage and, nearby, handcuffs hang from the ceiling, ready for use. In the living room there is a ‘videosofa’ where you can stretch out and watch the television monitor – from above. Beside the sofa there is a rug in the shape of a mouse and above the rug you find a trapeze (an incredibly vertiginous object!) that lends itself to a variety of improbable uses. Essentially, we were interested in the displacement of vision and functionality, creating, for the visitor, a sense of enjoyable disorientation.
